Halloween Poems

Five Little Pumpkin Sitting On A Gate

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate,
The first one said,
"Oh my, it's getting late."
The second one said,
"But we don't care."
The third one said,
"I see witches in the air."
The fourth one said,
"Let's run, and run, and run."
The fifth one said,
"Get ready for some fun."
Then whoosh went the wind,
and out went the lights,
And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight!

Spooks
- by Sandra Liatsos

There's a goblin at my window,
A monster by my door.
The pumpkin at my table
Keeps on smiling more and more.
There's a ghost who haunts my bedroom,
A witch whose face is green.
They used to be my family,
Till they dressed for Halloween.

Walk Into My Parlor
- by Mary Howitt

"Will you walk into my parlor?"
said the spider to the fly;
"Tis the prettiest little parlor that you ever did spy.
The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to show when you are there."
"Oh no, no!" said the little fly,
"to ask me is in vain;
For who goes up your winding stair
can never come down again."

Halloween
- by Mary Jane Carr

Witches flying past on broomsticks,
Black cats leaping here and there,
White-robed spooks on every corner,
Mournful moaning in the air,

Goblins peering out of windows,
Spirit-things that rap and run-
But don't be scared-it's just October,
Having one last hour of fun!

Haunted House
- by Jack Prelutsky

There's a house upon the hilltop
We will not go inside
For that is where the witches live,
Where ghosts and goblins hide.

Tonight they have their party,
All the lights are burning bright,
But oh we will not go inside
The haunted house tonight.

The demons there are whirling
And the spirits swirl about.
They sing their songs to Halloween.
"Come join the fun," they shout.

But we do not want to go there
So we run with all our might
And oh we will not go inside
The haunted house tonight.
The Scariest Thing
- by Mairi Tereas Gallagher

Some things are scary
Others are not,
Like ghosts and goblins,
And things that rot

Cats and dogs are not scary
At all,
All they do is play chase
And catch a ball.

But the scariest thing
Creeps around at night,
Looking for victims
To scratch and bite.

It hides its face
It's too ugly to see,
It rules all the monsters,
Both tall and wee.

Those who've seen his face,
Their eyes burst and bleed,
They beg for mercy
"Spare us, spare us," they plead.

But he's not a giver
He takes what he finds,
All sorts of people
Both sightseers and blind.

You've got the picture,
That he is the king
Of everything scary,
Every little scary thing.

So watch out at night 'cause if
By him you're seen,
He'll give you an evil grin
And say...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Dr. Oz Investigates: Early Puberty Epidemic in Girls

Today, girls are starting puberty as early as 7 years old. Dr. Oz looks into the causes and dangers of a worrisome epidemic that every parent and physician should be aware of. Learn what you can do to protect the young girls in your life.

Dr. Mehmet Oz begins a recent segment of The Dr. Oz Show by telling us in no uncertain terms that he's not happy about early puberty in girls - as a dad and a doctor. He says:
"Something is going on with our nation's girls, and I'm sounding the alarm."

Dr. Oz says to protect your daughters - and tells us how
Dr. Oz's important show on the subject are well worth a look. He interviews two doctors who specialize in children's health and two moms who are concerned about their own daughters early development (you should see the pictures comparing the girls to their mothers at the same age!). Importantly, Dr. Oz and his expert guests offer practical steps we can take to protect our daughters. Like:
  • Don't microwave food in plastic. Ever.
  • Serve hormone-free or organic meat and dairy products.
  • Use stainless steel water bottles - not plastic.
  • Choose personal care products with fewer chemicals, and skip them altogether when you can. For example, in lieu of putting on sunscreen (which can contain toxic chemicals), wear hats and shirts.I personally use green products, so I have no need to worry about that.
Here are the episodes to watch:

    Here are some tips on
    how to reduce your family's
    exposures to chemicals:

Tip #1: Know the ingredients in your
    personal care products.
Just because a label says “gentle” or “natural” doesn’t
mean it’s kid- safe. Look up your products on
    CosmeticsDatabase.com. Read the ingredients and
    avoid triclosan, BHA,Quaternium-15, fragrance, and
oxybenzone. Dozens of top selling children's bath care
    products contain 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde.

Tip #2: Eat organic & fresh foods.
Opt for organic fruits and veggies, or  find conventionally
grown produce with the least pesticides. Choose milk and
meat without added growth hormones. Limit canned food
and infant formula, as can linings contain bisphenol A (BPA).

    Tip#3: Pick plastics carefully.
Some plastics contain BPA, which is linked to cancer.
Avoid clear, hard plastics marked with a "7" or "PC" and
choose baby bottles made from glass. Don't microwave
plastic containers. Stay away from toys marked with
a "3" or "PVC." Give your baby a frozen washcloth
    instead of vinyl teethers.

Tip #4: Wash those hands, but avoid Triclosan.
In addition to reducing illness, frequent hand washing will
reduce kids' exposure to chemicals. Skip anti-bacterial
soaps, since they can be bad for the environment, aren't
any better than soap and water, and can contain pesticides
that are absorbed through the skin.

Tip #5: Skip the non-stick, the dangers of teflon.
When overheated, non-stick cookware can emit toxic
fumes. Cook with cast iron or stainless steel and bake with
    oven-safe glass instead.

Tip # 6: Get rid of that (toxic) dust.
Kids spend lots of time on the floor, and household dust can
contain contaminants like lead and fire retardants.
HEPA-filter vacuums capture the widest range of particles
and get rid of allergens. Leave your shoes at the door so you
    don't bring more pollutants inside.

Tip #7: Filter your tap water.
Use a reverse osmosis system or carbon filter pitcher to
reduce your family's exposure to impurities in water,
like chlorine and lead. Don't drink bottled water, which
isn't necessarily better. Mix infant formula with
    fluoride-free water.

Tip #8: Use greener cleaners and avoid pesticides.
Household cleaners, bug killers, pet treatments,
and air fresheners can irritate kids' lungs, especially
if your kids have asthma. Investigate less toxic
    alternatives. Use Green Products!

To your health! Take care of it and your family!

Did You Know......?

Did you know.................
50% of all illness is due to poor indoor air quality (Source: 1989 State of Massachusetts Study)
AIR FRESHENERS: interfere with the ability to smell by coating nasal passages with an oily film, or by releasing a nerve deadening agent! Toxins in air fresheners include: Formaldehyde: highly toxic, known carcinogen. Phenol: can cause skin to burn, peel, and sweat. Can cause convulsions, coma, circulatory collapse and even DEATH!

LIQUID DISH-SOAPS: is the leading cause of poisonings in the home for children under the age of 6 (over 2.1 million accidental poisonings per year) (contains formaldehyde and ammonia in most brands) One Million poisonings in Canada each year are due to household cleaner ingestion. Some are fatal. The #1 cause of household poisoning is dish detergent. What kinds of chemicals are in those products? http://www.rense.com/general19/chemical.htm

AUTOMATIC DISHWASHING DETERGENTS: contain dry chlorine that is highly concentrated. #1 cause of child poisonings, according to poison control centers.

CHLORINE BLEACH: is a strong corrosive and can burn or irritate skin, eyes and the respiratory system. Can cause vomiting or coma if swallowed! WARNING! Never mix with ammonia as the fumes are very dangerous and can be DEADLY!

AMMONIA: is very volatile and damaging to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract!

FURNITURE POLISH: contains Petroleum Distillates, which are highly flammable and can cause lung and skin cancer!

DRAIN CLEANER: most drain cleaners contain lye, hydrochloric acid or trichloroethane, which are all very caustic. They burn the skin and eyes, and can cause liver and kidney damage.

OVEN CLEANER: contain lye, which is a strong caustic and irritant to skin and eyes. Can cause tissue damage if swallowed.

TOOTHPASTE: can contain a number of harmful ingredients, such as: ammonia, benzyl alcohol/sodium benzoate, colors, ethanol, flavours, fluoride, formaldehyde, mineral oil, plastic (PVP), saccharin. Formaldehyde, mineral oil, PVP, and saccharin are all classified as carcinogens or suspected carcinogen, as is fluoride, which has been banned in many European countries and is the subject of concern with regard to thyroid problems. In fact, as of April 1997, toothpaste is required to carry poison control information on the label as even a small amount can harm or kill a small child.

Occupational Safety & Health analyzed 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products. A personal care product is de-fined as anything we use to clean our bodies, or make ourselves look or smell good.
The results are as follows:
884 are toxic
146 cause tumours
218 cause reproductive complications
314 cause biological mutation
376 cause skin and eye irritations
778 caused acute toxicity

Over the last 20-30 years, as more toxic chemicals have been introduced in greater amounts, the level of toxins stored in adipose tissues (fat cells) of our bodies has risen. Bio-accumulation studies have shown that some toxins store in our bodies for life. Greater and greater amounts are being stored at younger ages. Diseases that used to occur later in life are now appearing at younger ages. Diseases that used to be rare are more frequent. For Example: There has been a 28% increase in childhood cancer since the addition of pesticides into household products. (Source: National Cancer Institute)

In one decade, there has been a 42% increase in asthma (29% for men; 82% for women-the higher rate for women is believed to be due to women's longer exposure times to household chemicals) (Source: Center for Disease Control)

Due to the increase in toxic build-up in our bodies, including the toxic build-up of formaldehyde, dead bodies are not decomposing as fast as they used to. (Source: National Institutes of Health)

There is an increased risk for leukemia in children where parents have used pesticides in the home or garden before the
child's birth (Source: Journal of the National Cancer Institute)

Over 150 chemicals found in the average home have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological
abnormalities. (Source): Consumer Product Safety Commission

In most cases, however, you won't find much information on the label. There are no requirements of manufacturers to actually disclose what is in a product, and there is no regulation or enforcement. All of it falls under proprietary trade secret legislation.

Today, cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 35-74. In 1901 cancer was considered a rare disease. Statistics show that only 1 out of 8000 people had cancer. TODAY, according to the American Cancer Society, 1 out of every 3 people has cancer. TODAY, 1 out of every 2 people has been touched by cancer. The fear of cancer is on every-one’s mind these days. So many forms of cancer and they all had to start somewhere . . .

How Safe is My Family?
This is the question that every parent should be asking themselves.

We have no choice but to breathe the air, eat the food, and drink the water; but we DO have a CHOICE of what we put on our skin and what products we have in our homes.

I know that I personally do not ever want to believe that I caused harm to my family, when I had the choice to change it. I’d love to help ensure a safer home for your family.

For more information on how to make your home a healthier place for you and your family please go to my website and I will call you with the information. I would love to help you have a healthier safer home!
